How much money do you spend on health and wellness?

Wellness is a $4 trillion global industry – from boutique fitness classes, luxury water bottles, meditation studios, to the recent celery juice trend. While spending money on your health is generally a wise investment, it shouldn’t come at the cost of your financial stability.

We polled our social media followers, and 85% felt they spent too much money on gym memberships. However, achieving health and wellness doesn’t have to be expensive or even complicated.

With these tips, you can improve both physical and mental wellness on a budget:

Turn your phone off

Disconnecting from technology for just a few hours a week can help you decompress and be present. It can also reduce your stress levels especially if you use your phone to check work emails. Not to mention, increased social media use has been linked to negative emotions. Plus, disconnecting from technology is a great excuse to spend time with friends and family or take up a new hobby.

You don’t need to do a complex yoga or Pilates class to reap the benefits of stretching. Simply spend five minutes every morning or night doing some light stretching. Regular stretching can decrease muscle stiffness and pain, and protect joints from future injury. And, it’s a great excuse to focus on yourself each day (even if it’s just for a few minutes).

Go to bed earlier

One of the best things you can do for both your mental and physical wellbeing is to get more sleep. Try going to bed earlier, even if it’s only 15 or 20 minutes earlier than you normally do. Set an alarm on your phone each night to remind you to stop what you’re doing and start getting ready for bed. The more you prioritize your sleep, the easier it will be to make going to bed earlier a habit.

Take a bath

A warm bath can be just as good as effective at helping you relax as an expensive spa treatment. Try using Epsom salts in your bath water for added benefits. Make a tea, grab your favourite book and you’ll feel relaxed in no time.

Download a free meditation app

Start or end your day on a positive note with meditation. There are tons of free meditation apps and guided meditations available online.

Journaling is a huge trend in the wellness industry right now, but luckily, it’s very affordable. You can either buy a journal with guided prompts, or simply write down your thoughts in an empty notebook. Benefits of journaling include reduced stress, better memory and better moods.

Sign up for a corporate gym membership

Many workplaces offer some type of corporate gym membership which can help you access a workout facility at a discounted rate. Before signing up for a gym membership, ask your manager or HR department what types of corporate memberships are available for employees.

Take advantage of free gym passes

Most commercial gyms and boutique fitness studios offer free gym classes. With so many gyms opening up, there are tons of opportunities to take advantage of free passes. Free gym passes can be a great way to switch up your workout routine and allow you to try something new risk free.

Add herbs to your recipes

Many herbs have powerful health benefits, so adding them to your food is not only delicious but also a great way to make your meals more nutritious. Try adding some of these popular herbs to your recipes:

  • Tumeric is a great anti-inflammatory herb
  • Ginger can help treat upset stomach and nausea
  • Sage can help improve memory

Tip: Buy your herbs in bulk, or try growing your own herbs either indoors or in your garden to lower grocery costs

Add plants to your home

There’s a reason the ancient practice of Feng Shui tells us to keep plants in our home – they help purify the air, reduce stress, and some plants can even help us sleep better. So, next time you need to add some décor to your house or office consider buying a plant to help liven up the space.

A benefit of the health and wellness trend? It’s more accessible than ever. While some fitness studios and healthy restaurants are taking advantage of the trend by increasing their prices, there are now more ways than ever to achieve wellness without spending a lot of money. Take advantage of online resources, books and apps to try and add more wellness into your life.
